East Village

Modeled after a five-borough staple, the NY Deli, Dave’s Quality Meats has become just as beloved and frequented as the corner store. The butcher shop decor is replete with hanging meat hooks, and shirts that are freezer fresh, sealed in saran-wrap and Styrofoam. Carrying an array of fine fits and brands while located in lower Manhattan, DQM has fast become the neighborhood spot for sneakers and threads. Dave Ortiz founded the shop in late 2003 after working as team manager for Zoo York, acquiring the omnipresent know-how necessary to turn a sneaker boutique into a globally recognized arbiter of all things cool.

Serving only the finest brands and gear, DQM has even turned itself into a sought after label. In collaboration with Nike, Dave conceived one of the most memorable co-produced sneakers in the footwear industry: the Bacon AirMax 90. With the success of his collaborative projects and the delightful kitsch of the shop itself, Dave’s is a must-see location for any buyer in the market for quality gear and a photo worthy shopping experience.

NoLiTa

Occupying the space formerly known as Def Jam Studios, Classic Kicks channels the spirit of golden age hip-hop through fresh threads and fresher sneakers. The shop is close enough to most of the nearby boutiques of its kind yet stands alone like the red and white banner bearing the Classic Kicks logo outside the store. Carrying an eclectic line of footwear and apparel, it’s a location sure to have something for everyone, no matter how different the style sense.

Its bright red walls and open, shopper-friendly layout are conducive to browsing and even some conversation with the shop’s owners Jennifer and Nick, who’ve co-owned the shop together since 2003. Running on the friendly service ticket, the two have garnered a vast clientele of loyal customers and hope you’ll try the shop on for size too.

Nom de Guerre may be one of the most sophisticated boutiques the city has to offer. Comprised of a wide range of influences including art, fashion, social activism, and street-culture, NDG is a complex creative environment to say the least. Stocked with literature from various socio-political authors and clothing from top streetwear brands including Nom de Guerre’s house label, the dichotomy within the shop is evident but not disruptive.

The actual location of the store, underground at Broadway and Bleecker St., lends itself to the overall atmosphere the shop intends upon. Their sneaker selection is second to none and the aesthetic nature of the shop itself makes NDG a must-visit for the NYC shopper. Famous for their bumker-style construction and the fact that the building was a former meeting place for the Black Panther Party doesn’t do much to hurt the mystique NDG has built around itself.
